As the new year sparks reflection on work and purpose, research commissioned by National Fostering Group shows that more than a quarter (31%) of adults in Scotland want a more worthwhile career.
More than one in five (22%) say their current job is unfulfilling, with 33% of those citing a lack of societal impact as the reason. The findings also show that over half (59%) of Scots feel their skills are not being effectively used in their current role, highlighting a significant pool of untapped potential for meaningful careers.
Professions such as nurses, paramedics and firefighters continue to be highly regarded, thanks to the positive impact they make on society. Teachers and foster carers are also recognised for the vital role they play in supporting others and improving lives. Nearly a quarter of adults (23%) say they feel inspired when speaking to someone whose job truly makes a difference, with empathy (52%), compassion (52%), problem-solving (45%) and integrity (45%) being the qualities most associated with these roles – all skills that align closely with fostering.
Tim Barclay, CEO of National Fostering Group, says:
“It’s clear the roles we most admire – from first responders to teachers and foster carers – all have one thing in common: they change lives. Whether it’s protecting the public, educating young people or offering a safe and loving home, these roles are driven by purpose and empathy – values that really resonate with people today.
“In a fast-paced world, it’s easy to feel disconnected from the impact of your day-to-day job, especially when roles are increasingly driven by targets and technology rather than human connection. But careers which offer purpose, people-focus and a clear social good are clearly striking a chord. Fostering offers more than just a job – it’s one of the most important ways to make that kind of meaningful difference, changing a child’s life for the better, every single day.”
With many people across Scotland rethinking their careers at the start of the year, fostering offers a powerful opportunity to move into work that is genuinely rewarding and makes a lasting difference. For those looking to use their skills in a more meaningful way, and to change lives in the process, becoming a foster carer can be a fulfilling new career path.
