Why More Edinburgh Men in Their 40s Are Booking Skin Treatments

Tired eyes, deeper lines and a flushed complexion: for many men in their 40s, midlife shows up first in their skin.

With “male menopause” being discussed across the press and social media, Edinburgh aesthetic doctor Dr Ben Taylor-Davies says more local men are coming into his Stockbridge clinic with these concerns.

Is “Male Menopause” Real?

Dr Taylor-Davies, Co-Founder and Clinical Director of The Stockbridge Clinic, says the term is misleading.

He said:

‘Male menopause’ isn’t quite the right term. Doctors call it late-onset hypogonadism, or age-related low testosterone. In women, hormone levels fall fairly sharply during menopause, but in men testosterone declines slowly, by around 1% a year from their 40s.

What Happens to Men’s Skin

According to Dr Taylor-Davies, that gradual decline can show in the mirror.

He said:

Testosterone plays a role in keeping skin thick and firm, so as levels dip alongside natural ageing, many men may notice it in their skin. Collagen production slows, so skin gradually becomes thinner and less firm, and lines and tiredness start to show more. Years of sun exposure, and sometimes alcohol, can also leave redness and thread veins.

Self-Care, Not Vanity

He says the men booking in are mostly looking to feel better about themselves rather than chasing a dramatic change.

He said:

We’re seeing more men in their 40s coming into the clinic, and for most it’s about self-care rather than vanity. They want to look as healthy as they feel, with natural results and minimal downtime. Skin boosters are popular for improving hydration and firmness, and anti-wrinkle injections help men look fresher and less tired. Vascular laser is another favourite: it tones down facial redness and removes thread veins, and most men can go straight back to work afterwards.

Where to Start

Dr Taylor-Davies, who began his career in NHS emergency medicine, advises men to seek professional advice before booking any treatment.

He said:

For anyone new to treatments, I’d always recommend starting with a consultation with a qualified medical practitioner, who can be honest about what will work best for your skin.

He added:

And if you’re also noticing low energy, poor sleep or mood changes, speak to your GP.
