Newtongrange residents are being invited to showcase their gardens as the village’s annual gardening competition returns for 2026.
This year’s winners will be announced during a special community event marking the 100th anniversary of Newtongrange Welfare Park on Saturday 19 September.
The centenary celebration will bring together residents for an afternoon of live music, fairground rides, food and family entertainment at the historic village park.
Jeremy Adderley, Chair of Newtongrange Community Council, will present awards across several categories, including Best Garden, Best Pots and Baskets, Best Wild Garden, Best Fruit and Veg, Best Flowers and Best Young Gardener.
Mr Adderley said: “The centenary event at Newtongrange Welfare Park will celebrate the amazing green space that we are blessed to have right in the heart of our village.
“It is fitting that the day will also shine a light on the residential green spaces that the people of Newtongrange have lovingly tended and transformed.”
Entries will be judged by representatives from Newtongrange Guerrilla Gardeners and Newtongrange Community Garden, alongside Midlothian Councillor Ellen Scott.
Councillor Scott said: “I was delighted to be asked to help judge the Newtongrange Garden Competition. There are so many lovely gardens that I am sure it will be a very difficult task to choose one.
“I always feel at peace outside in a garden, and gardening is also a great way to exercise. It makes me feel close to nature and offers a gentler way to live.”
The competition is open to all Newtongrange residents. Entrants must register before Friday 7 August.
Judging will take place on Friday 14 and Saturday 15 August, ahead of the awards ceremony at Newtongrange Welfare Park on Saturday 19 September.
