Edinburgh Fringe audiences are being invited to paint the town red, green, blue and yellow this August as The Van Gogh Shogh arrives at the Assembly Rooms.
The wildly original theatrical experience asks a playful question: what would Vincent Van Gogh make of the 360-degree immersive shows now dedicated to his work?
Created and performed by Philadelphia-based writer, performer and “top notch clown” Donna Oblongata, The Van Gogh Shogh offers a riotous alternative to the polished immersive art experience. In this version, Van Gogh is recast as a bewildered food courier who has somehow stumbled into his own immersive afterlife.
Part sip ‘n’ paint, part karaoke and part Sotheby’s, the show is described as a deranged solo trip through the legacy of one of the world’s most famous painters. Four audience members are selected as Van Gogh’s protégées and invited to reproduce one of his best-known works under his unusual guidance.
The result is a fast-paced, unpredictable mix of anarchic comedy, audience participation and sharp commentary on art, creativity and value, complete with a subversive twist at the end.
Oblongata brings her high-energy and offbeat exploration of artistic legacy to Edinburgh following hit previews in London and Amsterdam. Audiences should be ready for a bold, chaotic and colourful night of performance, with the chance to unleash their inner Van Gogh along the way.
The Van Gogh Shogh will be performed at the Assembly Rooms on George Street from 6 to 30 August. Tickets are priced between £8 and £14.
