Lullabies for the Land: A Musical Celebration of Palestinian Culture and Global Heritage

Published:

On Sunday, 16 December at 7pm, the Augustine United Church in Edinburgh will host a heartwarming concert, suitable for the whole family, that celebrates Palestinian culture with music from Palestine and all around the world.

World-renowned harpist and composer Eleanor Turner will perform at the launch of Lullabies for the Land, a book of harp arrangements of global lullabies with artwork by Scottish-Palestinian artist Dima Nowarah. The event aims to raise awareness of cultural erasure as well as funds for two Palestinian children’s charities, the Ghassan Abu Sittah Children’s Fund and the Middle East Children’s Alliance.

Lullabies for the Land features eighteen lullabies from Palestine, Cherokee Nation, Europe, Japan, India and Scotland; it is a powerful celebration of cultural heritage and music as a universal language. Everywhere in the world at every moment there is a lullaby being sung to a child.

Turner will bring the book to life by performing all eighteen lullabies with harp and percussion, taking you on a journey around the world and diverse musical traditions.

“Music has the power to connect us across borders and cultures” says Eleanor, “and performing these lullabies is an act of resistance against oppression and colonisation”.

The Augustine United Church, a historic venue known for its inclusive and welcoming atmosphere, as well as regular support for Palestine and social justice, provides the perfect setting for an evening of inspiration and reflection through music and storytelling. We would love to welcome everyone to this event so children under 5 are free and 6-18 year olds just £5. Adult tickets are £10.
