Award-winning creative partners Eleanor Bishop and Karin McCracken welcome in EdFringe opening weekend to bring Heartbreak Hotel to Summerhall for full run of performances (01 – 26 August).
Eleanor Bishop and Karin McCracken of EBKM present Heartbreak Hotel: an exploration of heartbreak, and recovery, with witty and razor-sharp observations on the physiology of love, playing this August at Edinburgh’s much-loved Summerhall venue.
Joining the programme amongst other much-anticipated Fringe shows at Summerhall – such as Anatomy for Accountants (Java Dance Theatre), Hyper (Ois O’Donoghue and Jaxbanded Theatre), Show Pony (Chamäleon Berlin, still hungry and Bryony Kimmings), and A History of Fortune Cookies (Sean Wai Keung) – Heartbreak Hotel curiously explores the anatomical effects of heartbreak in a unique show for young hearts, the old hearts, and the broken hearts.
Incorporating Bishop and McCracken’s signature mixed-method storytelling, Heartbreak Hotel is a non-linear contemporary performance piece. Blending synth covers of classic breakup anthems – including live vocals from performer McCracken – with traditional scenes and playful, honest direct address, EBKM’s work combines story, synth, and science to personify various parts of the body and examine what happens to us when we’re bereft.
The development of Heartbreak Hotel was supported by Creative New Zealand, Hawkes Bay Arts Festival, Hannah Playhouse Trust, and Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington.
