Free Tool Library Memberships Offered Through ECCAN’s Green Initiative

Published:

Edinburgh, Scotland — The Edinburgh Communities Climate Action Network (ECCAN) is proud to announce an exciting new partnership with the Edinburgh Tool Library (ETL), a pioneering organisation that embodies the circular economy by lending tools instead of selling them.

This collaboration aims to support and empower ECCAN’s network of individuals and community groups by promoting sustainable practices, resource sharing, and skill-building — critical elements in the fight against climate change.

“At ECCAN, we believe that creating a more sustainable Edinburgh requires bold, innovative partnerships,” said Mark Dowey, Network Lead at ECCAN.

“The Edinburgh Tool Library exemplifies circular economy values, and we’re thrilled to work together to amplify the impact of our shared mission.”

The Edinburgh Tool Library operates much like a traditional library, but instead of books, it lends out tools — from power drills and gardening gear to DIY essentials — to members across the city. The result? Reduced waste, lower consumption, and a thriving community of makers and doers. Beyond the tools, ETL offers workshops, supports local projects, and fosters a strong “make and mend” culture that aligns with ECCAN’s mission to inspire and change from the ground up.

Free Membership Offer for ECCAN Network

To celebrate this partnership, ECCAN is offering free one-year ETL memberships to a select number of individuals and organisations within its network:

15 community groups based in Edinburgh with an annual turnover of £150,000 or less, operating exclusively within the city.

16 individuals who are Edinburgh residents and not currently ETL members as of April 24, 2025.

This initiative is designed to remove barriers to sustainable action and give communities access to the tools they need to repair, reuse, and innovate — without the financial burden of buying equipment outright.

“We’re constantly inspired by the creativity and commitment of our network,” added Mark.

“With this opportunity, we hope to make it even easier for community groups and individuals to deliver climate action in their communities.

How to Apply

Applications for the free memberships open on Monday, June 2nd, 2025, via the ECCAN website.

This partnership represents a shared vision for a greener, fairer Edinburgh — where resources are shared, communities are empowered, and sustainability is a collective effort.
