How does electric underfloor heating work? Important tips before installation

Before you start installing electric underfloor heating, you should definitely read the operating and assembly instructions for the entire system. Even if the system is faulty or damaged, you can only find out about its faultiness after carrying out the correct installation according to the instructions. Furthermore, any complaint will not be accepted if the installation did not take place in accordance with the guidelines.

To install electric underfloor heating products, it is important to have all the necessary tools and materials listed. To perform the installation, you need the help of a qualified electrician who has the qualifications to perform this profession. The installation should also be carried out in accordance with local requirements and regulations. Can electric underfloor heating systems replace the main room heating? Electric underfloor heating works mainly as supplementary heating.

Each heating system has a heating cable placed about 7 cm apart. Before buying, choose the right size of the system so that it is enough to heat the entire room.

The mats should be placed next to each other, not one on top of the other. You should also remember about the distance of the mat from the wall of about 10-20 cm.

It is also important to determine the place where the thermostat will be located, which must also be installed by a licensed electrician.

First step of installing the foil underfloor heating mat—how to place the mat on the floor

To install energy efficient electric underfloor heating, you should place the mat on the subfloor and direct the heating cable downwards. Then you can use cement mortar. It is important to determine the layout of the mat before you permanently attach it to the subfloor. Be careful not to damage the cable.

Loose cables should be secured. If the mat is too large, you can cut it around the perimeter, but without damaging the heat cords. Before applying the cement mortar, make sure once again that the mat works.

It is possible to use a self-leveling mass instead of cement mortar. Then the mat is laid with the cables facing upwards and glued to the substrate with glue or double-sided tape.

When using a mortar and self-leveling mass, make sure that these products can be used when installing electric underfloor heating. You can then start installing the tiles.

There are many very high quality and energy efficient systems. One of them is SUNFLOOR Electric Underfloor Heating mat 450W. This is a great example of heating that can work well as both an additional and main source of heat distribution in wetrooms. The relatively thin system does not require additional deepening of the floor. It can be used in wetrooms, also under the shower area.

Second step – connecting the thermostat

To be able to set the optimum temperature, you need to connect a thermostat. It should be installed in a previously determined location. The device must be connected by an electrician. Earthing is also necessary, which will be an additional safeguard in the event of any malfunction.

Before connecting the thermostat to the underfloor system, disconnect the device from the power supply.

Where to install electric floor heating system

Installing electric underfloor heating mat can be done in bathrooms and wetrooms. This is also a solution that works in other rooms. However, it should be remembered where installing this mat is not recommended. It should not be installed close to walls. It is best to leave a distance of about 10-20 cm between the mat and the wall. If the room is large and the entire heating system has a larger surface area, this distance must be 20-30 cm. The exception are walls with glass. Heating mats can be installed next to them to improve thermal comfort.

Some people install electric underfloor heating mats on wall-mounted seats that are covered with tiles or directly in the walls. This way, the room temperature can be raised more quickly and a comfortable place to sit can be created.

Electric underfloor heating is an effective combination of comfort and heating efficiency. It also has a positive effect on design and does not take up additional space in small interiors. A properly installed system by an electrician will increase the comfort of using the interior, improve the quality of everyday life, and also increase the value of the property.
