Edinburgh’s Hogmanay Outdoor Events Cancelled Due to Severe Weather

Edinburgh Castle lit up with vibrant projections during Hogmanay festivities in Edinburgh, Scotland, December 29, 2024.
Edinburgh Castle dazzles with projections as part of the festive and Hogmanay celebrations in Scotland, December 29, 2024.

For many, Edinburgh’s Hogmanay isn’t just a spur-of-the-moment plan; it’s a bucket-list event that takes months—sometimes years—of saving, planning, and dreaming. This annual celebration draws visitors from all over the world, who carefully juggle work schedules, budget for travel, and secure accommodation in one of Europe’s most popular destinations during its busiest season.

It’s heartbreaking to imagine the disappointment for those who’ve invested so much to be here. Just yesterday, I spoke to a young couple who spent the last few years envisioning their dream Hogmanay trip to Scotland. With only ten days of vacation annually, this was their chance to experience the magic of the New Year in Edinburgh. Now, with outdoor events cancelled, they’re left navigating an unexpected turn of events.

And let’s face it: this isn’t the sort of situation where travel insurance swoops in to save the day. We all know how insurers love to dance their way out of payouts. But that doesn’t ease the sting for travelers who’ve spent a small fortune on flights, hotels, and festive plans. It’s hard not to wonder how many might leave with a sour taste and decide not to return. As of this morning, 31 December 2024, organisers of Edinburgh’s Hogmanay have confirmed that all outdoor events scheduled for today and yesterday have been cancelled due to extreme weather conditions. This includes high winds and heavy rain, prompting safety concerns. While this marks a significant change to the city’s traditional New Year celebrations, a range of indoor events will still take place as planned.

Outdoor Events Affected

The following outdoor events have been cancelled:

  • Night Afore Disco Party (30 December).
  • Hogmanay Street Party, Concert in the Gardens, and Midnight Fireworks at Edinburgh Castle (31 December).

Organisers UniqueAssembly expressed regret over the cancellations, emphasizing that public safety is their top priority. They have reassured attendees that ticket providers will be in contact regarding refunds.

Indoor Events Going Ahead

Despite the cancellations, Edinburgh’s Hogmanay still offers a host of exciting indoor events:

  • Swamplesque (until 4 January): A burlesque and drag parody filled with laughs and festive fun at Assembly Hall.
  • Idlewild Concert (30 December): Edinburgh-based indie-rock legends Idlewild performed a special show last night to a sold-out crowd.
  • Polar Ice Bar (open until 4 January): A unique pop-up bar made entirely of ice, serving festive cocktails in a frosty -8°C environment.
  • Bairns New Year Revels (today): A family-friendly ceilidh with music, dancing, and Hogmanay fun for all ages.
  • Candlelit Concert at St. Giles’ Cathedral (tonight): Ring in the New Year with a performance of J.S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio by the St. Giles’ Cathedral Choir and Camerata.
  • New Year Revels: Maximum Ceilidh Edition (tonight): Celebrate the New Year with ceilidh bands across two dancefloors at the Assembly Rooms, featuring premium ticket perks such as whisky tastings and exclusive seating.

City Leaders and Police Support the Decision

City of Edinburgh Council Leader Jane Meagher acknowledged the disappointment but urged visitors to enjoy the indoor programme. She emphasised the importance of staying updated on weather and transport conditions throughout the day.

Chief Superintendent David Robertson of Police Scotland also voiced support for the decision, highlighting the need to prioritise public safety.

Severe Weather Warnings

The UK Met Office has issued yellow and amber weather warnings for rain, snow, and strong winds across Scotland, impacting travel and safety. Winds up to 70 mph are expected in exposed areas, with hazardous conditions reported on roads and ferries.

Looking Ahead

While the cancellation of outdoor events is disappointing, Edinburgh’s Hogmanay continues to offer other experiences indoors. From ceilidhs and concerts to unique attractions like the Polar Ice Bar, the celebrations remain a showcase of Scottish culture and hospitality.
