30 Years of Callanetics Evolves into Lunasecret – Edinburgh’s New Fitness Revolution

Published:

Edinburgh Callanetics, a revered fitness studio that has been a cornerstone of Edinburgh’s health and wellness community for over three decades, is rebranding to Lunasecret.

This transformation marks the introduction of a never-done-before fitness program – fusing barre and bodyweight exercises, with each movement inspired by the music – alongside the much-loved Callanetics classes schedule.

For 30 years, Karin MacKenzie has been at the centre of the fitness industry in Morningside, Edinburgh, dedicating her life to teaching the Callanetics method. With a background as a professional dancer trained in classical ballet, Karin’s journey has been one of evolution and empowerment. Her expertise as a Master Trainer and her signature “Body Blitz” program have garnered acclaim for their transformative effects, cementing her reputation as a mentor and guide in body shaping and fitness.

Callanetics, the exercise method that has been Karin’s foundation, was developed in the 1980s by Callan Pinckney. Based on tiny, precise muscle movements, Callanetics targets specific muscle groups with gentle yet highly effective exercises. This method quickly became a global phenomenon, breaking records with Pinckney’s bestseller, “10 Years Younger in 10 Hours,” and continues to hold a significant place in the fitness industry.

Now, with Lunasecret, Karin MacKenzie is bridging her years of teaching expertise with her passion for music and dance. Inspired by her great-niece, Luna, who was born on a blood moon, hence the red moon in the logo. This is symbolic of change, new beginnings and transformation, and the rebranding represents a natural evolution in her journey. Lunasecret is designed to transform the body swiftly and effectively, combining Karin’s deep-rooted love for classical ballet, contemporary dance, and various other dance forms including hip-hop, Latino and street dance, with each class culminating in relaxing meditation. Her training with Esther Fairfax, daughter of Lotte Berk (the originator as ‘Barre’ as we know it today), and Kelly Wackerman of The London Method, has further enriched her approach, allowing her to offer a program that is both innovative and authentic.

Teaching Callanetics for 30 years has been a profound part of my life. My love for various styles of music and dance always simmered beneath the surface, leading me back to my roots in classical ballet and contemporary dance. Recently I’ve seen the age-range of my clients grow, and see younger generations celebrate Callanetics, Barre, and attend my range of classes. I knew I wanted to add something new to my studios portfolio and that I could create something that has never been done before. Lunasecret allows me to truly express my authentic self, combining my own interpretation of music and favourite choreography, and modernise my classes and studio’s offering at the same time.

“Whenever I hear a new song, I instantly start to imagine the movements and exercises, and see the studio come to life in front of me. It’s like how I imagine a chef approaches a new dish; the music builds the basis of the dish, and the movements are my ingredients. When these movements and targeted toning are done enough times in sequence, it instantly becomes a deep and transformative workout; there are 13 major muscle groups, and I use hundreds of movements to target each of these in a fun and effective way. I can’t wait to welcome women of Edinburgh to experience my new classes, and hope they’ll fall in love with it as much I have”.
